When someone in Abuja types "pharmacy near me", "church in Gwarinpa" or "website designer in Abuja", the first thing Google shows is usually a map with three businesses on it. Those three get most of the calls. If your business is not on that map, many customers will never know you exist.
The good news is that getting on Google Maps is free. It takes about an hour to set up properly, and the work keeps paying you every day after that. Here is how to do it well.
1. Create your Google Business Profile
Your place on Google Maps comes from a free Google Business Profile. Go to business.google.com, sign in with the Google account you want to manage the business with, and add your business.
Use your real business name, exactly as customers and your signboard know it. Do not add extra words like "Best Pharmacy Abuja Cheap" to the name. Google treats that as spam, and it can get your profile suspended.
2. Choose the right category
The main category is one of the strongest signals Google uses to decide when to show you. Pick the one that describes what you are, not everything you do:
- A pharmacy should choose Pharmacy, not Store.
- A church should choose Church or the closest denomination category.
- A school should choose the level, such as Primary school or Private school.
You can add a few secondary categories for other services, but keep them honest.
3. Shop with an address, or a service-area business?
This is where many Abuja businesses get confused.
If customers visit you, such as a shop, pharmacy, church or school, show your real address so people can find you on the map.
If you go to your customers, or you work from home, set yourself up as a service-area business. You hide your home address and list the areas you serve instead, for example Abuja, Federal Capital Territory and Nasarawa.
Many people live in Mararaba, Karu, Nyanya, Lugbe or Kubwa because the centre of Abuja is expensive, and still serve clients across the city. A service-area profile is built exactly for this. Never invent an Abuja address you do not use. Google checks, and fake addresses are one of the most common reasons profiles are removed.
4. Verify your business
Google will ask you to prove the business is real before your profile appears. Depending on your business, it may ask for a short video showing your premises, signboard or tools of work, or it may use your phone or email. Follow the steps it gives you and keep the video simple and clear.
5. Fill in every detail
A complete profile is shown more often than a half-empty one. Add:
- Your phone number and website
- Your opening hours, including Saturdays if you open
- A short description in plain language: what you do, who you serve and where
- Your services or products, with prices where it makes sense
- Real photos: your shopfront, your team, your work, your products
Photos matter more than most people think. A profile with real, recent photos looks trustworthy. One with no photos looks abandoned.
6. Keep your name, address and phone the same everywhere
Google compares your details across the internet: your website, Facebook page, directories and anywhere else you are listed. If one place says "Benemoh Street" and another says "Benemo St", or you use different phone numbers in different places, Google becomes less sure about you.
Write your business name, address and phone number once, exactly, and copy that same version everywhere.
7. Ask happy customers for reviews
Reviews are one of the biggest reasons a business appears in the top three on the map. After a good sale or service, send the customer your review link on WhatsApp and ask politely. Google Business Profile gives you a short link you can share.
Reply to every review, good or bad, calmly and professionally. Never buy fake reviews. Google removes them, and customers can usually tell.
8. Connect it to a good website
Your profile and your website support each other. Your website should clearly say what you do and where, mention the areas you serve (for example Wuse, Garki, Gwarinpa and across Abuja), and show the same name, address and phone number as your profile. A fast website that works well on phones helps you rank on Google Maps and in normal search results.
How long does it take?
Your profile can appear within days of verification. Climbing into the top three for busy searches takes longer, often a few months of complete details, steady reviews and a good website. It builds on itself: the more customers find you, the more reviews you get, and the higher you go.
Being found is not luck. It is a complete profile, honest details, real reviews and a website that agrees with all of it.
